Travelling

In case you were wondering where we’d gone (which I’m sure you were ..right? right? 😉 ) it’s been a month of travelling for most of us here at TC, with a bit more to come.

Steve’s been on a bit of a far-east tour, taking in Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore (where Karim and I caught up with him – hence the raft of new Singapore reviews all in one go 🙂 ). Karim’s been busy in Hong Kong, and I’m off to Denver and then Grenoble in a weeks time.

Quite a list of places to try in Denver, where we have a few venues, but no reviews. Could be a long week 🙂 As for Grenoble … well allegedly there is some life there after dark, but it’s just a flying visit, so we’ll see about that!

Later in the year, we should be updating Jakarta and Paris again, with maybe a swing through Bali if there’s time.

Of course, there’s only a small number of us and lots of you, so please keep adding those venues and reviews for all the places we can’t get to (i.e. about 99% of the world 😉 ).

Google Mapplet

[update: this is now included in the Google Mapplet directory 🙂 which is here ]

If you’re a fan of Google maps, you may know that Google recently added the ability to include ‘Mapplets’ on your personal map page.

Basically these allow you to include other content that you may find useful, such as traffic, weather, real estate and – of course – nightlife!

We’ve created our own Thursday Club mapplet, which you can include on your own maps. If you can’t find it in the Google directory of mapplets, you can add it by entering the URL on the ‘add content’ page. The address is:

http://www.thursdayclub.com/city/tc_mapplet.xml

Right now the number of cities and venues is limited to a selection from the main Thursday Club site, but we’ll be adding more shortly, so you should see the list grow as you use it.

We hope you find this useful – especially when travelling or stuck in a strange land somewhere 😉

World’s coolest city 2007

Quite some time ago now we held our first ‘world’s coolest city’ vote. After a lot of interest, New York came out the winner, followed by Sydney and Melbourne. We did attempt to deliver the trophy to the New York mayor’s office, but for some reason that turned out to be rather difficult 🙂

Anyway, the coolest city poll is back for 2007. Early voting has Zurich in the lead, but plenty of time to get your votes in yet.

You can vote here.

Good luck!

Collactive

Depending on your point of view, Collactive is either a naughty way to game the system, or an interesting way of ‘pushing’ hot topics out to interested readers. Born of the ashes of an Israeli spam fighting team, the system allows you to create a link to an article, video, website etc and push out an ‘APB’ promoting it. The idea being that you can push up stories on Digg, Reddit, the BBC and so on.

I came across it when researching alternative promotional methods for the site (created a sample link here). I’m not sure that the gaming system itself can’t be gamed. Or that large volumes won’t swamp people with too much info. However, if they then allow subscription by channel, tag or interest then that has a lot of potential and removes a lot of the passive (and time-consuming) searching for interesting items that people do now on sites like Digg.

There’s a widget too. Not sure if this will work:

Add your own venues!

It’s been a long time coming (ok, since 1999 but who’s counting 😉 ), but we’ve added the ability for you to add your own favourite venues to the Thursday Club site. Until now, the list of venues and cities available had been limited to those which the core team had added.

Unfortunately, we aren’t very scalable – well, our waistlines are – but, even given we travel a reasonable amount, there were only so many places we could realistically cover by ourselves.

So .. subject to a couple of caveats, you can now add your own bars, clubs, restaurants and so on.

There is a wizard that steps you through the process, and you get the chance to pinpoint the location on a map, upload pictures and so on.

You will need to be logged in as a member, and new venues are marked as requiring moderation (although they appear in searches, city lists and so on). They will still require one of the TC admins to review and amend/update/ok/delete as appropriate before achieving ‘official’ status.

Anyway, we think this is a great opportunity to really grow the list of venues we cover on the site, and open up to much more of a community effort.

Best of luck, and please let us know if you find any issues – it is still a new process and might be a bit creaky 😉 Also, if you have any suggestions for making things easier or more seamless, please let us know too.

You can find the link to add a new venue from the main site menu (top left), or in various areas of the site, such as the news tabs.

Or, this is the direct link.

Thanks for your help and happy adding 🙂

Pie and Mash(up)

After a lot of head scratching and brain-fading have managed to add an extension to the basic venue mapping which I think (IMHO of course) is quite nifty. If you look at any city page (eg http://www.thursdayclub.com/london) there is now a ‘map’ tab. This lets you select multiple venues (based on the current filter) to show on the map at the same time. You can click on the
venue name or the little ‘pushpin’ to pop up an info box with the tel number, pic and link to the venue details.

Couple of things to note (as I finished this very late last night so it can be a bit temperamental).

– Not every venue is geocoded yet. Most are, but some places (like Hong Kong) are painful to get automatic geocoding for right now. Hopefully Google or Yahoo will extend their API.
– There’s an issue where if you click on the map tab before the page has finished loading the map won’t show. Click the map tab again and it should be fine. Will look into that.
– Will add a better filter device and allow tag searching for the venues.

Still, seems good so far 🙂

Photographic

Hello, and Happy New Year to you all!! I trust you had a good time over Christmas and the New Year. Karim and I were in Sydney, whilst Steve was relaxing in Portugal and Craig was deported from France due to lack of snow. Last heard of near London getting very drunk 🙂

It’s not all been fun and games though – there have been some changes to the site – and a couple that we need some help with.

Every venue now has an associated picture gallery. So if you got pics from the inside or outside of the venue, mad nights out there that you’d like to share, please add them. To do that, just go to the venue concerned, click ‘add your own pictures’ and then select whether you’d like to upload a picture, or link to an externally hosted picture (maybe you already have an account at somewhere like Flickr). You can also add a short comment so we know what it was you were doing when the picture was taken 🙂

The second thing is the ‘location video’. If you click on the ‘map’ tab when looking at a venue, it’s now possible to link to a video hosted on Google Video or YouTube (currently). We’d like to get some good location shots so that it makes it easier for people to find the venue. A quick pan of the local area, the walk from the station or main intersection – that kind of thing. There’s instructions available, and a sample video too.

Thanks for your contributions so far since the site came back alive again. We still haven’t done any form of publicity, other than this blog, until we’re happy with the quality, but please tell your friends about it 🙂

Cheers for now!
