Beer or Whine?

A hot topic for debate here in Sydney currently is mayor Clover Moore’s proposal for more intimate ‘Melbournesque’ bars and lounges. I have to say I am in 100% agreement with her. Sydney has some reasonable cool bars and a lot of pubs, but for great little Euro-cafes, bistros, wine bars, lounge bars, supper clubs and hole-in-the-wall cool venues, Melbourne wins hands-down.

Right now, Sydney laws mean that in addition to expensive alcohol licenses, you also have to pony up for a ‘social impact analysis’ at roughly $60,000 plus associated legal fees and other nonsense. In Melbourne, a handful of virtually penniless students could open a bar in an upturned skip at the back of an alleyway. And they do. And it works.

The crusty old folk at the AHA, who seem to be stuck in some 1960s timewarp, believe that Sydney folk don’t want to have a nice glass of wine in a small quiet bistro and that large pubs with pokies and sports on TV are what us bogans really enjoy. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong!

I’m glad to see that support for Ms Moore is coming from people like Neil Perry and other notable nightlife owning Sydneysiders too.

I do enjoy Sydney, but having recently returned from a trip to Grenoble in France, we need some good old Euro-chic. Bring it on Clover!

That person in the toilets …

One of my pet peeves in any bar or club is that ‘person in the toilet’. You know the one, the ‘toilet attendant’ who turns on the tap for you and hands you a paper towel.

If you’re really lucky they’ll also have a fine selection of crappy fragrances and chewing gum. I hate those people!

London bars and clubs are infested with them (there is an urban rumour that they are actually mandated by the local council to help spy on drug use and the like), but they do pop up all over the world. Most of the time the loos are just as filthy as if there were nobody in them, and you end up running out rather than hand over your money (at least I do 🙂 ).

In asia, where there is a person, at least they are also cleaning. Although in some countries (esp Thailand) you may also find that your friendly toilet attendant also gives out shoulder massages and cricks your neck … while you are standing peeing! (for the men, obviously). All very strange.

I did hear that these people pay ‘rent’ to the clubs for their spot, and to be honest it’s not exactly a glamorous job, but it’s totally unecessary. Having been in Australia for a while now, I’m pleased to see that the phenomenon hasn’t really reached here yet – let’s please keep it that way.

Anyone actually like dealing with these people??

PS: Steve does crack me up in his dealings with the toilet folk though, including paying forward his fee for the whole evening (he didn’t have any change), and buying one of the bottles of dodgy aftershave because his lady friend liked the smell when he came back from the loo 😉

1000 venue milestone

Just added venue number 1000 – woohoo 🙂

Oh, in case you’re wondering, it was The Argyle in Sydney. Pretty cool place in the rocks. Full review to follow unless someone beats us to it 😉

Date for your diary

Looks like we may be on a mission to the Sydney Bar Show and Bar Awards ceremony on the 18th and 19th September. If it’s anything like the London Bar Show should be an interesting one 🙂

Where is everyone?

Doh! Been a mad couple of weeks with everyone variously somewhere between Hong Kong, Sydney, Brisbane and London. Luckily Karim’s been doing his duty and updating Hong Kong for us. Bad news is development’s been ‘paused’, but we’ll get there. Actually not a lot to do pre-end of Beta, so bear with us. Plan now is for this weekend. I knew promising a date would get me in trouble 🙂

Some good coverage of the maps stuff though, so not all bad 😉

Sugar Room

[update] Now that the site is well and truly alive again, Sugaroom has been updated on there (see it here). I always thought it was ‘Sugar Room’. Turns out it’s actually Sugaroom. Oops 🙂

Went to a nice restaurant the other night called The Sugar Room, which is in Pyrmont in Sydney (Australia!). Right down on the water at the end of Harris Street. It’s all become very fancy pants down that way now, quite Canary Wharfesque, minus the hoodies 🙂

Anyway, I had the barramundi, which was jolly good. Friendly service, although they stuffed up my dessert a bit, but I think that’s because it all got a bit panicky due to transport issues etc (long story). You can also just sit outside with a drink and look over the water to Balmain, which would make a pleasant afternoon start to a session IMHO.

The address is:

Sugar Room, Shop 2, 1 Harris Street, Pyrmont.
www.sugaroom.com.au

I’ll stick something on the main site (once I mend it!).
