Collactive

Depending on your point of view, Collactive is either a naughty way to game the system, or an interesting way of ‘pushing’ hot topics out to interested readers. Born of the ashes of an Israeli spam fighting team, the system allows you to create a link to an article, video, website etc and push out an ‘APB’ promoting it. The idea being that you can push up stories on Digg, Reddit, the BBC and so on.

I came across it when researching alternative promotional methods for the site (created a sample link here). I’m not sure that the gaming system itself can’t be gamed. Or that large volumes won’t swamp people with too much info. However, if they then allow subscription by channel, tag or interest then that has a lot of potential and removes a lot of the passive (and time-consuming) searching for interesting items that people do now on sites like Digg.

There’s a widget too. Not sure if this will work:

Add your own venues!

It’s been a long time coming (ok, since 1999 but who’s counting 😉 ), but we’ve added the ability for you to add your own favourite venues to the Thursday Club site. Until now, the list of venues and cities available had been limited to those which the core team had added.

Unfortunately, we aren’t very scalable – well, our waistlines are – but, even given we travel a reasonable amount, there were only so many places we could realistically cover by ourselves.

So .. subject to a couple of caveats, you can now add your own bars, clubs, restaurants and so on.

There is a wizard that steps you through the process, and you get the chance to pinpoint the location on a map, upload pictures and so on.

You will need to be logged in as a member, and new venues are marked as requiring moderation (although they appear in searches, city lists and so on). They will still require one of the TC admins to review and amend/update/ok/delete as appropriate before achieving ‘official’ status.

Anyway, we think this is a great opportunity to really grow the list of venues we cover on the site, and open up to much more of a community effort.

Best of luck, and please let us know if you find any issues – it is still a new process and might be a bit creaky 😉 Also, if you have any suggestions for making things easier or more seamless, please let us know too.

You can find the link to add a new venue from the main site menu (top left), or in various areas of the site, such as the news tabs.

Or, this is the direct link.

Thanks for your help and happy adding 🙂

That person in the toilets …

One of my pet peeves in any bar or club is that ‘person in the toilet’. You know the one, the ‘toilet attendant’ who turns on the tap for you and hands you a paper towel.

If you’re really lucky they’ll also have a fine selection of crappy fragrances and chewing gum. I hate those people!

London bars and clubs are infested with them (there is an urban rumour that they are actually mandated by the local council to help spy on drug use and the like), but they do pop up all over the world. Most of the time the loos are just as filthy as if there were nobody in them, and you end up running out rather than hand over your money (at least I do 🙂 ).

In asia, where there is a person, at least they are also cleaning. Although in some countries (esp Thailand) you may also find that your friendly toilet attendant also gives out shoulder massages and cricks your neck … while you are standing peeing! (for the men, obviously). All very strange.

I did hear that these people pay ‘rent’ to the clubs for their spot, and to be honest it’s not exactly a glamorous job, but it’s totally unecessary. Having been in Australia for a while now, I’m pleased to see that the phenomenon hasn’t really reached here yet – let’s please keep it that way.

Anyone actually like dealing with these people??

PS: Steve does crack me up in his dealings with the toilet folk though, including paying forward his fee for the whole evening (he didn’t have any change), and buying one of the bottles of dodgy aftershave because his lady friend liked the smell when he came back from the loo 😉

1000 venue milestone

Just added venue number 1000 – woohoo 🙂

Oh, in case you’re wondering, it was The Argyle in Sydney. Pretty cool place in the rocks. Full review to follow unless someone beats us to it 😉

Twitter, Facebook, Myspace etc …..

Hello,

Just to let you know that the members section now allows you to associate your profile with various other sites such as LinkedIn, Digg, Facebook, Yahoo!, Twitter etc (currently 10 sites).

So, if you’re keeping multiple personalities on multiple sites, you can link to them from your member homepage. You can also choose to show links to just your TC friends.

Working on tighter integration through the site APIs, but if you use Twitter, give it a whirl as that will automatically show your picture and current status message on your member page. Look out for the ‘networks’ tab.

You can see an example of this in action here

Did we miss any major networks? (netscape ..?)

Date for your diary

Looks like we may be on a mission to the Sydney Bar Show and Bar Awards ceremony on the 18th and 19th September. If it’s anything like the London Bar Show should be an interesting one 🙂

Member reviews

Well, it’s only taken us about 6 years and 3 versions of the site but there’s finally the ability for members to add reviews 🙂

Previously you could only add comments (you still can – this is available to non-members too). Now members can also add a fuller review, with scores for service, atmosphere, food, wyd etc. You can also add ‘plus’ and ‘minus’ facts along with a summary. Pretty much the same as a standard Thursday Club review.

These reviews show on the homepage and are all available from the venue page.

Still working on the ‘my reviews’ part of the members section, so just a link to the profile for the mo.

Over to you guys 🙂
